Remembrance Day Long Weekend

Once Upon a ASheep will be closed Saturday, November 10th

We hope you all have a great weekend as you remember those who served our country bravely and made the ultimate sacrifice. As usual, we don’t open on long weekends to give our hard working volunteers a break.

I love this free pattern for a knitted poppy. You can find this pattern on Ravelry.

Road Work Woes

If you’ve been to the shop lately you’ll notice that there is road work happening on Lougheed Hwy, right in front of our shop. So far they’ve been working on the north side of the street but will soon be tearing up the road and sidewalk on our side of the street.

Many of the shops along the Lougheed have been losing business due to the inconvenience to customers in trying to get into the various shops.

However, we know knitters are FEARLESS and will climb any mountain to get YARN! But we want to make sure you’re rewarded for your dedication and loyalty to Once Upon a Sheep.

10% Customer Appreciation Sale

On ALL Yarns and Needles

*This is in addition to the PK Discount

How to Get to Us:

Parking in back accessed by 225th St or 226th/Royal Cres. Ring bell by left door and someone will let you in.

Thank you so much for shopping with us through this trying time. I know that our customers appreciate why we do what we do –

  • for the love of knitting/crocheting and YARN
  • to help send children to summer camp

All the volunteers at Once Upon a Sheep Yarn Shop

Happy Thanksgiving!

IMG_2498All the volunteers at Once Upon a Sheep would like to take this opportunity to wish all our wonderful customers a Happy Thanksgiving. We’ll be taking the weekend off to be with family and friends to celebrate.  God bless you this special weekend.

we’ll be back to regular hours starting Tuesday, October 9th.

What are you knitting this summer?

First, I hope you’ve noticed our NEW LOGO! We’re so pleased with the design and feel it makes a statement about who we are and what we want to communicate. What do you think? (and sorry about that MailChimp email, I’m still figuring out how to get the logo into that!)

Summer has been a time of rest and travel for some of our volunteers. A couple have traveled across Canada to visit family, others off to visit their kids and look after grandchildren and some on camping adventures. I’ve been relaxing at my trailer and seeing time rejuvenating – with my knitting in hand.

I’ve been working on a lovely project called Current by Kephren. I found it on Ravelry, of course. I’m using Malabrigo Silkpaca and it’s so lovely and soft. You’ll be able to see it in the shop this fall as I’m knitting it as a sample. However, I want one for me!  Here are some pics of it so far…

So we’d love to see what you’re knitting. Share your projects with us on our Facebook page on on Instagram and tag us.

Summer hours will be in effect till after the Labour Day weekend. And remember, we close on long weekends to give the volunteers a break.

Summer Hours are:

10:00 am till 2:00 pm Tuesday to Saturday

Happy knitting/crocheting!

By the way, the logo was designed by You and Me Graphics

Summer Sale

I love a good sale…especially a yarn sale. I’ll even buy a yarn I don’t even need when I see it on sale! Do you know how hard it is to work in a yarn shop and there be a sale on? Well, my stash is getting to the point where my husband dragged me away out of town so that I wouldn’t be there when this sale was on. Can you believe that???

Anyway,  it’s time to clear our inventory and do we have some deals for you!

  • All Cotton and Cotton Blends are on sale -20% off
  • All sock yarns are on sale – 20% off
  • The following yarns will be 25% off:

Also, check our sale bin for deals 30% and up.

Sale Starts Saturday, July 21st!

*PK discount does not apply to yarns that are on sale

Just so you know, they’re going to be doing some road work on Lougheed Hwy so you may have to park at the Haney Place Mall behind the shops on the north side of the street and walk over.

Happy Summer Knitting!

Yarn Shopping…sigh

Well friends, I’ve told you it’s that time of year and so you know what we’ve been doing…yep, YARN SHOPPING!

Ordering for the fall is the best – the sales reps come and see you carting suitcases full of luscious samples of some of the most beautiful yarns. It’s all we can do to just take the Visa and say, “I’ll take everything!” This year we managed to restrain ourselves just a little bit but we do have some new and exciting yarns coming.

Here are just a few new yarns (and new to us) we’re bringing in:

  • Soave Degrade (Mondial)

  • Ruby (Diamond)
  • Sock Twins (Estelle)
  • Uneek Sock Kits (Urth)
  • Harvest (Urth)
  • Alpaca Merino (Estelle)
  • Baby Wool (Lang)
  • El Cielo (Cascade)

We heard you and have sourced some great options locally and from Canada…

  • 100% Cashmere (Inspiration Yarn – a new Vancouver based company)
  • Farm Fairy – Thanks for Mutton, Toats ma  Goats and Ewe So Glamorous!
    • Keryn is also doing up a colourway just for Once Upon a Sheep!

We’re also looking at a couple more Canadian yarns suggested by you in our survey.

In the meantime, we brought in some Cascade Cherub Baby (4ply and Aran) and they’re on the shelf already.

Cascade is also a yarn company that really knows how to do sock yarn. Cascade Heritage Silk in Peruvian tones is so beautiful. You’re going to want to try this out. Use it for socks or for a lovely shawl – the colours are lovely.

Stay tuned for more to come and in the meantime,

Happy knitting/crocheting!

Get Ready for June

Saturday, June 9th, 2018

Put it in your calendars, friends! Bring your knitting and crochet projects and a comfortable lawn chair down to Once Upon a Sheep at 22558 Lougheed Hwy. Bring some goodies to share and we’ll make sure there is some tea and coffee available for everyone. We’re praying for good weather so watch for updates. However, what’s a little rain where our crafty passions are concerned!

In honour of our WWKIP Day we are having a sale on all Cascade Yarns – 15% off and your PK Card discount applies on Saturday, June 9th ONLY. We have a large selection of Cascade Yarns so you’ll have a lot to choose from.

Fall Yarns

We are having a great time picking some new yarns for you to enjoy. Thank you to those who have already filled out the survey.  Some of the yarns we’re looking at are Bergere, Sugarbush, Katia, Lang, Urth, Estelle, Online, Opal, Mondial, Sweet Georgia, Farm Fairy and more! We saw the initial responses to our survey and we are bringing in more DK & Fingering yarns – and some lovely lace! We are now in colour and fibre overload and still have more to look at!

There is a new yarn company in VancouverInspiration Yarn. They have lovely cashmere and reasonably priced. You’re going to love it! Check out these colours.

And don’t forget to fill out our survey if you haven’t already done so. It will only take you a few minutes and it really has helped us so far to know how to serve you better. Your feedback matters!

May Happenings

Hello Everyone!

We’ve been busy down at the shop. Just when you think you’re getting settled you end up rearranging things, putting this and that here and there. It’s an endless process and than you to all our volunteers who give their time to make Once Upon a Sheep a great little shop.

We’re loving this new yarn! 60% Cotton 40% Acrylic

May and June are the months that our yarn companies get their fall line up ready to show and so the sales reps load up their cars and they hit the road touring around to all the LYS’s. That’s the fun part of what we do – seeing all the wonderful yarns and choosing which ones we want to bring you.

So we are asking you for input into the process for us. We want to know how better to serve you and have prepared a short survey for you to fill out. It should only take you only a few minutes to fill it out, but your answers will help guide us as we order for the fall. As always, feel free to message us through the comment section below, our email address, our Facebook page or on Ravelry.

Here is the survey:

We’ve added some more yarns to our sale bin!

30% off plus!

Come and check them out.

Happy knitting & crochet!

April Happenings

Hello fellow knitters and crocheters.

We’re all beginning to settle in to the new space quite nicely and finding a place for everything. The volunteers at the shop are all waiting for you to drop by and see our new space and latest goodies we’ve received.

Woolith Fair is Happening Now!

Come on down to the shop with your passport for Woolith Fair 2018!

woolith passport stop button 2018

We have a special sale on – 25% off all yarns! The PK or FVKG (Fraser Valley Knitters Guild) discount does not apply to sale yarns, but does apply to needles and accessories, which are not on sale.

Focus on Yarn

I’ve been working with one of our new yarns and if you follow us on Instagram (@onceuponasheepyarn) you’ll see what I mean. I decided to try out the new yarn we got in this spring from Katia’s Concept line – Cotton Cashmere. It has 90% Cotton and 10% Cashmere – just enough to soften the yarn a little bit more.

Baby Teddy Hat

I’ve been using 3.25mm needles with it for a 26 st tension, and I made a lovely little baby teddy hat for the shop as a sample. You can see that there was still so much yarn left when I finished the hat. What could I make with it? I decided on a cute little pair of booties from one of the books in my collection. (Sorry for the different colour – Instagram filters)

cottoncashbootiesHowever, even after that I still have yarn left! So I’m going to make up a pair of tiny mittens to go with the hat and booties. I’ll likely have yarn left over still after that.

So kudos to Katia for a great yarn that’s lovely to work with and seems to last forever! I knit this for the shop but I think I’m going to buy some of the cream or tan colour and make a baby set for a future grand baby.

New Bags!

We’re so excited to tell you about our new bags! I was looking for a place to source new bags for the shop and I stumbled upon a local company in Richmond that uses recycled plastic to make their bags. Econobags are made from recycled plastic sourced from a recycling company in Burnaby. We used a local artist, Derek Chiu, to design the lettering for us and we picked them up in time for Woolith Fair.

We’re quite pleased with how they turned out. I was surprised to find out they mostly ship to the states and don’t have Canadian customers! Let’s try to change that and spread the word about these great bags doing our bit for the planet!

Fall Ordering Time…

It’s almost time to get our orders for the fall together. We’ll be meeting with distributors soon and choosing yarns and colours – always so much fun! We’re looking at some local yarn companies and indie dyers as well and hoping to bring yarns to the shop you’re going to love.  If there’s a yarn you’d like to see us carry, let us know by dropping us an note at We’d love to hear from you.

Happy knitting & crocheting!
